Our Mandate

Our studio is an inclusive, family-friendly space for all ages and levels of experience. Training in the performing arts encourages confidence, creativity, perseverance and teamwork. SaskExpress invests in the growth of each student and we are fortunate to be part of their development as individuals and performers.   

Saskatoon Classes

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre combines character with voice and dance to create a triple threat artist.  Students work with vocal coaches, choreographers, and acting coaches. Our professional staff excels in the art of Musical Theatre and performance and our programming is meant to provide all students with positive, confidence-building experience.  

We have FOUR options for students interested in Musical Theatre.

  1. Recreational Programs from preschool to adult – Fun! Positive! Creative!
  2. Competitive Program – A more demanding dance program with a mandatory Ballet or Jazz class element.    
  3. Production Troupe -  Built on the success of our spring musical program, we have developed two Production Troupes, at a junior and a senior level. Please see the Drama link for more information.
  4. The Saskatoon Mini Express & The Saskatoon Expressions – This program is geared to students who want to perform. Please see the Mini Express & Expressions link for more information

Recreational Musical Theatre

Creative Tots Foundations - (ages 3 & 4) Join us for this high-energy, entry point option for our youngest preschool performers, combining Musical Theatre with Ballet and Jazz training! Students perform in December as well as in the Preschool Showcase on Saturday, April 4th.

Recreational Programs 

Students attend a sixty-minute class, once per week.  They work on movement, voice, and acting exercises and perform in December at our Christmas concert WinterSong, and in the year-end production.  This program is a great introduction to musical theatre or is a perfect option for students who want to do Musical Theatre but who do not want to attend competitions.  Students do not require any previous training and will work in a positive and encouraging environment.

Mickey’s Magical Dance Party - (ages 5 - 7) Students will be introduced to the magic of Disney and create short stories with music and dance. The class will perform in the December showcase and in the year-end production May 30th AND May 31st, 2020.

Aladdin - (ages 7 - 11) Students will work on characters, singing and dancing through a medley of songs from the Aladdin Broadway production.  The class will perform in the December showcase and in the year-end production May 30th AND May 31st, 2020.

Broadway Now! - (12 and up)  This class is geared to teens who want to focus on Musical Theatre without the competitive dance element.  The material will come straight from the great white way with music and characters from shows currently on Broadway.  Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress, Hamilton and so much more!   The class will perform in the December showcase and in the year-end production May 30th AND May 31st, 2020.

Adult Musical Theatre - We know you are out there and you want a chance to sing/ dance and act.  This is the class for YOU!   We are excited to offer Musical Theatre for adults that will focus on music, movement and character work from the golden age of Broadway to the shows that are currently the talk of the town in New York.

Competitive Programs –  Please note Jazz /Ballet enrollment is mandatory for these classes.

Students attend a NINETY-minute class, (SIXTY minute class for the Novice group) once per week AND must also take jazz OR a ballet class. CDTA Jazz classes are also recommended.  Students will compete in a minimum of two competitions in the spring and should be available and plan to attend these events.  Students will also perform in our year-end production on May 30th AND May 31st, 2020!  We do not audition for these classes, however, we reserve the right to move students between the Intermediate and Senior classes based on ability and experience. 

Novice Competitive Musical Theatre - (Ages 7 – 9) Work with a vocal coach, on acting exercises, and with a choreographer to create a unique performance piece. Students will attend two competitive events. Students MUST be also registered in Jazz and/or Ballet.

Intermediate Competitive Musical Theatre - (Ages 12 – 14) Work with a vocal coach, on acting exercises, and with a choreographer to create a unique performance piece. Students will attend two competitive events.  Students MUST be also registered in Jazz and/or Ballet.  Please note the Inter and the Senior Musical Theatre are offered at the same time and student placement may shift once classes begin.

Acrobatic Arts

Our studio offers the acclaimed Acrobatic Arts program, which integrates technique, strength training and flexibility development with dance, allowing our students to safely develop acrobatic and aerial moves to complement their dance training. Our instructor is Acrobatic Arts Certified.

Acrobatic Arts 1 (Recreational) - If you are new to acrobatic arts or have limited acrobatic experience, please register for this program.  Students will be assessed in September and if it is felt that a student is better suited to the Acrobatic Arts 2 program then we will suggest this as a class option for the student. Class runs from September to May and there is also an option to complete the Certified Acrobatic Arts Exams.

Acrobatic Arts 2  (Competitive) - This class is designed for students with acrobatic/gymnastic experience AND who have jazz dance experience or who have previously done Acrobatic Arts 1 and been recommended for this class. If you are unsure about what level to try, please register for Acro 1. Class runs from September to May and students will work on Acrobatic elements AND put together a performance piece that will be featured at a minimum of two competitions and be performed in the year-end production May 30th and May 31st, 2020.  There is also an option to complete the Certified Acrobatic Arts Exams.

Ballet

Ballet is the foundation for dance technique and development. Classes will incorporate choreography with barre work, technique and exercises to build core strength, flexibility, and fluidity through movement.

Recreational Ballet Program

Beginner Ballet - (ages 9 - 11)
If you want to dance, but are worried that you are starting too late, this is a great class for you. Discover ballet, dancing with kids your age.

Teen Ballet - (ages 12 and up) 
This is a class for new dancers who want to learn ballet with students their own age. Learn with us in an inclusive, encouraging space.

Adult Ballet
This is both a technique and choreography for the adult who wishes to continue or begin with ballet. Geared to more of a beginner / intermediate level, dancers will work on technique, flexibility and ballet combinations creating a unique and original presentation for our year-end production.

Competitive Ballet Classes - 45 – 120 minutes

Classes focus on technical development through barre work and exercises along with choreography. Dancers perform in at least two competitive events annually, and our year-end production May 30th and 31st 2020.  Classes run from September to May.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is an expressive dance style that combines elements of several genres including ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern with an emphasis on the connection between mind and body through fluid movement. Dancers will explore the genre and create a piece that will go to a minimum of two dance competitions and be performed in our year-end production on May 30th and May 31st, 2020. Students interested in the intermediate contemporary class must-have jazz and/or ballet experience. The senior contemporary class must be taking ballet and jazz.

Drama

Our drama programs include musical theatre productions as well as core dramatic arts training

Junior Troupe - This 2-hour program is meant for ages 8 and up. Students will work on Frozen Jr to be performed in at the Refinery Arts Centre February 1st and 2nd 2020. 
Monday 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Senior Troupe - This 2-hour program is meant for ages 14 and up (or by permission)  Students will stage Heathers (School Edition)  while working on a variety of theatre techniques including improv skills, scene studies, and audition techniques.  Performances will be staged March 28th & March 29th, 2020 at the Refinery Arts Centre.

New Sessional Classes (September to December) or (January to April)

Improv and Exploration 1 - (8 – 10 Years) - An introduction to acting and performance that starts out learning how to improvise and then develops into a product that will be performed at the end of the session. Confidence and creativity building all in one class!

Theatreworks 1 - (ages 11 – 14) - Start with improv and then move to scenes and then you will write your own production to be performed at the end of the session. Confidence, creativity, and teamwork combine to create a memorable performance experience.

Classes are once a week and range in length from 45 mins to 1 hour in length. These classes focus on jazz technique, improving flexibility and terminology. Competitive Classes will attend a minimum of two competitions in the spring season. NEW Teen Jazz - So you would like to dance, BUT you didn’t start when you were small. We have the perfect class for you!  Teen Jazz is an intro to a jazz class that will teach you jazz basics and into combinations that will allow you to gain a good foundation in this dynamic dance discipline. Class size is limited to ensure we can work with you at your pace. Students will perform in the year-end production on May 30th and 31st 2020.

Technique Classes

Competitive jazz class students and students wishing to improve technique are encouraged to take a CDTA (Canadian Dance Teachers Association) Jazz Exam our Jumps and Turn class and our new Dancer Wellness class to strengthen technical ability. Students registered in Exam Classes do NOT have to dance the exams, but can do the class for technique purposes.

CDTA Grade 1 Jazz - Students will work on jazz technique, terminology, history and rhythm studies.

Tap

All classes are once a week and 30 minutes to one hour in length. These classes focus on tap technique and terminology. All classes take part in pictures and the year-end recital which is being held May 30th and May 31st, 2019. Classes that are competitive will attend a minimum of two events. For students in competitive tap, it is recommended that students take CDTA (Canadian Dance Teachers Association) tap exam classes to improve their technical ability.

We also have a highly successful Adult Tap program with two levels. Tap 1 is for beginners or students wishing to work at a slower pace, and Tap 2 is for students who want to be more challenged or who have previous tap experience. Our adult tappers perform in our year-end showcase and will have the opportunity to perform in our December showcase.

Tap Adult Beginner - A perfect class for you to learn something new. Rhythm, sounds, combinations and eventually a year-end recital performance danced with a sense of confidence and accomplishment.

Tap Adult Intermediate / Senior - A class for the tapper who have completed the Beginner class, or who wants to dust off their tap shoes and get back on the stage. Dancers will continue to be challenged and will perform in our year-end production on May 30th and May 31st, 2020.

Novice (Competitive) Tap - (ages 6 - 8) A 45-minute class perfect for beginner tappers!
Thursday 5:45 pm – 6:30 pm

Junior (Competitive) Tap - (ages 9-11) A 60-minute class.
Thursday 6:30 pm – 7:15 pm

Intermediate Competitive Tap - (ages 12 - 14) A 60-minute class.
Tuesday 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Senior Competitive Tap - (ages 14 and up) A 60-minute class.

Tap Technique and Exam Classes

CDTA Tap Exam 1 – Students will work on tap technique, terminology, history and rhythm studies. This is a great add on for any student taking tap. Completing the actual exam is encouraged but optional.

Vocal Technique

As Saskatoon’s only triple-threat musical theatre studio we are pleased to offer vocal technique classes that focus on breath support, theory, harmony and solo work. Class sizes are intentionally small to allow students to work in groups to develop important vocal skills that will allow them to sing AND dance safely without developing vocal damage. Find your voice with our vocal tech classes.

Vocal Tech 1 (Beginner/Inter) – Wednesday 8:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Vocal Tech 2 (Senior) – Wednesday 8:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Competitive Solos/Duos/Trios

Each year competitive students have the opportunity of signing up for to perform a solo, or a duet or a trio during the competition season.

Please note that initial fees are for choreography and do not include the actual entry fees which vary by event, or any costume. Once you are registered we will contact you about music, partners, etc and set up a rehearsal schedule for you. You will be taught choreography and instructors will work with you throughout the year, BUT your success will be directly linked to the effort that YOU put into practicing and working on your piece(s).

A form will be sent home regarding competitions and entering these, along with deadlines for entry. You will not be entered in any competitions until the forms are returned.

Students may enter any genre they are a registered student taking classes in. Also, if you wish to do MORE than one solo or duo, register, and then we will contact you and you can let us know what you plan to do and we can adjust your registration accordingly. THANKS!
