CLASSES

Our Mandate

Our studio is an inclusive space for all ages and levels of experience. The performing arts encourage confidence, creativity, perseverance, and teamwork. SaskExpress invests in the growth of each student, and we are fortunate to be part of their development as individuals and performers.

Spark Performing Arts Preschool
Combining the arts, with a literacy and numeracy curriculum that will prepare your child for Kindergarten, Spark is a unique preschool program designed to give your child a creative head start on their educational journey. Our teacher has a Bachelor of Education degree and holds several dance certifications.
Please check out our Spark Page for more information and to register!

Recreational Programs
Our recreational program includes acting, dance, and voice options for all ages.  We draw inspiration from the diverse musical theatre cannon of productions and song cycles, and we design programs to support the three elements that comprise the triple-threat theatrical designation: music, dance, and drama!
All our recreational programs involve either an in-studio performance component OR are part of our year end production as well as smaller showcase events throughout our season.

Competitive (Dance & Musical Theatre) Programs
Our competitive dance program has an emphasis on the technical foundation of dance and teamwork, with training geared toward attending competitive events in the spring.   Students are expected to practice and there are class requirements before advancement can occur.    Our qualified teaching team utilize Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA), and Acrobatic Arts training and instruction with choreography, and in offering technical exams.
All our competitive musical theatre and dance programs are part of our year end productions and have other performance opportunities throughout the year.

Performance Programs
All the world may be a stage, but it is certainly more fun to perform for an audience! Our performance groups: The Mini Express & The Expressions and our production classes focus on teamwork, creativity, communication, and confidence building skills.

Our recreational, competitive, and performance classes are divided by age. For competitive classes, age is only a guideline and final placement will depend on technical skill level and work ethic.

Finding Nemo JR (9-12)

Finding Nemo JR is musical adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves. Finding Nemo JR. brings a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship, and adventure. This is a complete musical presentation that will be staged in early June.

Saturday 1:00pm – 2:30pm, September to May

Mean Girls Jr.  – (12+)

The Plastics have deemed Broadway Junior worthy of their presence in Mean Girls JR! This "fetch" musical is packed with keen wit, an undeniably catchy score, and a sincere message for everyone. Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. Cady and her friends devise a "Revenge Party" to end Regina’s reign with Cady going undercover as an aspiring Plastic. When the lines between the real Cady and her Plastic self get blurred, she must find her way back to herself and her true friends. Adapted from Fey's 2004 blockbuster film and the Broadway smash hit, Mean Girls JR. will be the queen bee of your stage! This is a complete musical presentation that will be staged in early June. 12 year old students enrolling in this program must have previously been part of a Sask Express musical production.

Competitive Solos/Duos/Trios

Each year competitive students have the opportunity of signing up for to perform a solo, duet, or a trio at the competitions. Please note that initial fees are for choreography and do not include the actual entry fees which vary by event, or costume. Once you are registered online, we will contact you about music, partners, etc and set up a rehearsal schedule for you.

You will be taught choreography and instructors will work with you throughout the year, but your success will be directly linked to the effort that you put into practicing and working on your piece(s). We want students to have positive experiences with their pieces at the competition so that they are proud of their performance. Once it is close to the event date, if we feel that a dancer is not confident and ready to perform, we will not let them compete at that event. We hope that with added practice the student will be able to perform at the next competition.

A form will be sent home in the fall regarding competitions and entering these, along with deadlines for entry. You will not be entered in any competitions until the forms are returned.
Students may enter any genre that they are a registered student taking classes in. Also, if you wish to do more than one solo or duo, register, and then we will contact you and you can let us know what you plan to do and we can adjust your registration accordingly.

Choreography fees are due at time of registration (or in the case of multiple entries, a payment plan should be in place that will have all fees paid by March 31st)
Competition Fees due – December 1st (or in the case of multiple entries, a payment plan should be in place that will have all fees paid by March 31st)
